Great excitement at the Gosport Half as many of our runners got their first chance to represent Winchester Running Club in a competitive event. Despite being a bit exposed to coastal breezes Gosport is one of the best half marathon’s around and usually attracts some quality athletes from all over the South. It is also a HRRL event so fingers crossed our efforts here might yet count towards that league.
We (and the club itself) are all in slightly different places with respect to our membership and affiliation admin so things are still a bit vague but we had 16 athletes taking part under the WRC banner plus one or two others who were racing but unfortunately still in admin limbo.
The WRC men were fantastic…..in the event organisers scoring (not necessarily HRRL scoring) we had three full teams of 4 plus numbers in hand. Our “A3” team was led by Justin Corrie and Dave Gaskell cruising round at “marathon pace” to finish side by side in 83’56, Alex Whiting 84’04 and Nick Davies 87’21 packed out the team who finished in an impressive 9th place. Our B’s were 14th and our C’s were 55th, time will tell if those results also count towards HRRL league places.
Our ladies were no less fantastic with Sarah Gurney 89’11 and Sarah Shedden 91’53 both 2nd in their Age Cats but sadly admin delays and diary conflicts meant our ladies teams were incomplete.
Such a thrill to finally be out racing for Winchester Running Club, do look out for the upcoming HRRL events (the next one is the Victory 5 on 3rd December) and lets fill those team sheets!
