We are delighted to have been invited to enter 2 teams for the 38th South Downs relay (SDR) on Saturday 7 June 2024.
If SDR is new to you it’s an amazing event where teams of 6 runners race off road from Beachy Head (near Eastbourne) following the course of the beautiful South Downs Way over 18 consecutive stages – ending up at Winchester.
It’s a true ‘hand to hand’ relay where each runner takes on 3 stages spaced throughout the day to bring the baton back to Winchester 100 miles later (well, 97!). It’s fantastic to race back home!
We need 12 runners, a minimum of 4 reserves, at least one driver (possibly with a car) per team and a few people to help us marshal the handover at Holden Farm at the stage 17/18 handover.
There are plenty of people who can help with questions, so if you’d like to know more, please let me know.
Entry will be £23 TBC per runner (not reserves) plus a contribution to fuel for the drivers
If this sparks your interest and sense of adventure, please register your interest below so we can confirm our team and plans! It’s a brilliant team day out, super friendly and fiercely competitive. A perfect day out for Winchester Running Club!

Join your other local runners and club members for an informational and social evening at the South Downs Social. Winchester Running Club’s lead coach, Andy Parkinson, will host a workshop to explore how our thoughts, feelings and beliefs impact upon our performance in an endurance sport.
A range of interventions can be used to help key performance areas such as confidence, emotional control, attentional control and the motivation to continue even when cold, wet and tired. We will explore how one of these interventions might be used to help achieve our goals. During the workshop we will cover:
As well as being an England Athletics Endurance Group Coach, Andy gained accreditation with BASES as a Sport and Exercise Scientist with a specialism in Sport and Exercise Psychology. He has worked with a number of athletes in a range of different sports including gymnastics, boccia, rugby, badminton, moto=x and of course running.

🌟🏃🏼♀️CC6 UPDATE🏃🌟
From the organisers:
Sunday 19th Jan 2025,
Race Start: 9.30am
Hamwic, Stubbington, and Netley are hosting the next CC6 race at Itchen Valley Country Park, Allington Lane, West End, Southampton, SO30 3HQ. Parking will be at the site – it is a ticketed barrier on entry, and you will need to pay for parking at a machine before exiting.
Please car share as much as possible. PLEASE DO NOT PARK ON THE VERGES OR ON ALLINGTON LANE.
We would like to take the opportunity to request donations for the Southampton food bank, of non-perishable items. There is a link here to provide more information on this:
The collection point will be in the car park near the start/finish area, marked with the red Hamwic Harriers flag.
Cakes and water will be provided at the finish, please bring your own cups / water bottles, and flags and tents will be pitched here.
The course is approximately 7.6km long and a mixture of forest / woodland paths and grass, some sections of which will be muddy and slippery, as well as roots to be aware of… trail shoes are advised. The start and finish is at point A on the map, and the route comprises one small loop of section ‘B’, and 2 large loops of section ‘C’. Please listen to marshal instructions as there will be occasional areas that are narrow, or crossing short but slippery bridges.
The route can be found here:
https://www.plotaroute.com/route/2812624
We will be using parkrun barcodes to automate results processing, see details on the CC6 website. Please bring your parkrun barcode on the day.
Spectators are welcome including spectators’ dogs – please note dogs are not allowed on the bridal paths, and please observe instructions provided on signage at the park.
We look forward to welcoming you on the day!

As previously mentioned, training on Tuesday, June 25th, will be a little bit different. It will include a club EGM, a visit from our kit partners, Alton Sports and, of course, the staging of WRC’s Magic Mile Handicap Stakes.
The mile is an iconic distance in GB athletics, synonymous with some of the biggest names in middle-distance running. This will be your chance to race over this distance on a fast, flat grass track. To confirm your attendance at the mile and EGM, please follow the link to complete the short form, registering your name and most recent/fastest 5k time (or estimate if you do not have one). Each heat will be run as a handicap race. Whilst each runner will get an individual mile time, they will also be racing to win their heat.
The venue will be Gaterfield as normal and the schedule for the evening will be as follows:
Pizza will be provided by Pie in Winchester (which will be very nice!) and Alton Sports will be there with a range of running kit to view and try.
Please submit your entry by 12.00 pm Saturday 22nd June (giving you a chance to have one more time trial at a Parkrun). The heat’s timetable will be published on Sunday 23rd June. When not racing, you will also have the opportunity to help with timekeeping, so if you have a stopwatch, bring it with you.

The Welsh Castles Relay is a 2 day, 20 stage, 209 mile staggered relay stage race, held mostly on road but with many hills and mountains on route from Caernarfon to Cardiff with an overnight stay in Newtown, organised by Les Croupiers Running Club Cardiff.
Teams compete in one of four categories – Open, Ladies, Vets and Business House. Races within races are also a key feature as individuals try to bag individual stage wins and teams battle it out for both the overall category awards and the special mountain stage prizes. There are six mountain stages (three on each day) in all and three team mountain stages prizes: the Kings (Open), Queens (Ladies) and Monarchs (Vets).
We have been allocated 2 teams for this years event. Please indicate whether you want to participate by registering below. Further details of logistics and travel arrangements will be communicated seperately.

103 miles, 10 Stages, Off-road through the Cotswolds.
The Cotswold Way Relay is now in its 32th year. It works as 10 back-to-back races, with each stage having a mass start at the expected arrival time of the 1st runner from the previous stage.
The relay is over 90% off-road. Starting from Chipping Campden in the early morning, using the way-marked route of the Cotswold Way through to Bath in the early evening. It takes in many hills, woodlands, fields and tracks, all offering spectacular views of the countryside. The trail is split into 10 stages, varying in ascent and length, to offer a differing flavour for each runner in the team. Apart from a few busy road crossings there are no marshals, or additional markers, so route finding is all part of the spirit of the event. In recent years the Cotswold Way Authority has considerably improved the signage, as part of its upgrade to National Trail status. The race route follows the National Trail except for a couple of well indicated changes made for safety reasons
The event is over 18s only. We hope to enter 2 teams but the event is limited to 100 teams overall. A payment link will be sent when teams are confirmed in April. Please sign up now to indicate you are interested in participating. Other logistics and costs will be communicated separately.

a number of rabbit holes and tree roots around the course, as well as the odd puddle and patch
of mud so please be careful. The park is open to the public and we do not have exclusive use.
Therefore, please be aware of the potential for non-runners on the paths we are using. The route
will be well marshalled, with all turns being manned and tape will be used to mark the way in-
between marshal points. Please note that as well as the tail runners, there will be several
marshals running amongst the back of the field ensuring no runners feel isolated. We have been
asked to remind runners that headphones should not be worn during the race.
There is plenty of parking at the country park but please be aware that you need to pay for
parking. Payment machines are available in all car parks and accept cash, credit card or can
be paid for using the Ringo App. The Ringo number for this is 4910, we suggest downloading the
app in advance. All car parks are to be used, we will cone off any spaces that are reserved.
Please follow marshal instructions and be patient as cars may stack up. This doesn’t mean the
car parks are full, just that some of them are quite small and it takes a bit longer to manoeuvre
into the spaces. There is strictly NO parking on the verges and NO parking on the road outside
the country park. IVCP are very supportive of CC6 and RR10 but upsetting the local residents
could jeopardise this support and future events. Please car share where possible to reduce the
number of vehicles. There is also bicycle lockup facilities near Go Ape. The start and finish are in
the main field next to Go Ape. This is the same field used for Itchen Valley Parkrun. You will pass
the cafe on your left, then carry straight on to the main field. Water and cakes will be available at
the finish, but please bring your own cups and please take away your litter. There are ongoing
works at the park and the toilets are currently situated in the portaloos across from the café. The
café will be open from 10:00 for post-race refreshments. Club tents can be located in the Start /
Finish field.
Have a great run!
